Brief Biography

Kevin graduated with three degrees in Physics from the University of Guelph. Today he is a research scientist within the Experimental Studies Section of Environment Canada where he leads the Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) group. He is well known nationally and internationally for his development of a variety of Lidar systems, including two aircraft Lidar systems, mobile scanning Lidar lab and various ground-based zenith-pointing Lidar systems. His main research interests are directed at understanding more about the optical properties and transport mechanisms of aerosols and ozone and their impact on climate, visibility and air quality.

Kevin is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Western Ontario. He was recently featured in the Einstein Series on the Nature of Things. Kevin has travelled extensively, gets to play with very expensive toys ... and enjoys going to work everyday. Kevin thanks UofG for "giving me all the right tools in my toolbox."

Where did you go to high school?
Centennial C.V.I., Guelph

What made you choose University of Guelph?
The campus atmosphere and accessibility to the professors.

What made you choose to do an undergrad degree in physics?
I originally wanted a degree in Chemistry but my first year Physics professor inspired me.

What did you like about studying physics?
The ability to study very relevant and exciting "systems" that impact everyday life.

What did you do for fun when you were an undergrad?
Played lots of snooker and billiards.

Favourite place to eat in Guelph?
University Centre

Favourite place to hear music in Guelph?
My lab in the basement of the Physics building.

Favourite place to hang out on Campus?
Grad lounge!!

What has your career/life path been from Guelph to where you are now?
When I graduated with my Ph.D., I went on to do a Visiting Fellowship with Environment Canada working on the 1994 Space Shuttle Discovery mission.

What inspires you?
The complexity and simplicity of life.

What keeps you grounded?
My wife and children.

One of your dreams for the future?
To visit the Antarctica - I have already visited Canada's Arctic several times.
