Cryogenic Transmission Electron MicroscopeThere is a Leo 912AB energy filter transmission electron microscope with cryogenic capabilities (cryoEFTEM) in the Guelph Regional STEM Facility. The omega filter allows the selection of electrons of specific energies to form images. This capability can be used to enhance contrast in regular bright-field imaging by removing inelastically scattered electrons, or can be used to form elemental maps by using only these inelastically scattered electrons with characteristic energy losses. The cryogenic capability allows biological specimens to be visualized "trapped" in their native state in vitreous ice.
