Honours Physics Scholarships

Amount: A number of awards of between $1,800 and $5,000 depending on admission average.

Offered by the Department of Physics, these awards will be made based on the student's admission average and paid in a number of instalments (for example, $2,000 in year 1 and $1,000 in each years 2, 3 and 4 for a $5,000 scholarship; $1,000 in year 1, $800 in year 2, $600 in each of years 3 and 4 for a $3,000 scholarship; $1,000 in year 1, $800 in year 2 and $600 in year 3 for a $2,400 scholarship; and $1,000 in year 1 and $800 in year 2 for a $1,800 scholarship). Second and subsequent instalments will be given subject to the student continuing full-time with at least a 70% average in an physics major program, and taking the physics courses required in that program. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program with high academic standing and a declared intention of pursuing an major in Physics, Biophysics, Chemical Physics, or Theoretical Physics, or a Co-op stream of these programs.

W.C. Blackwood Memorial

Amount: One award of $450.

W.C. Blackwood Memorial Entrance Scholarship

Qualifications: Student entering the first semester level of the B.Sc. program, who declares the intention to pursue an honours program in Physics.
Application not necessary.

Copernicus Scholarships in Physics

Amount: Four awards of $1000.

Semester: 3

Copernicus Scholarships in Physics

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 3 and are registered in semester 4 of one of the majors programs in Physics. To be eligible, students must have completed the courses PHYS*2440 and PHYS*2460 with the minimum of an A average. The awards will be made to the students with the highest average in the Physics courses taken in the first and second semesters and in PHYS*2440 and PHYS*2460.

Physics Travel Scholarship

Amount: One (or more) of $500

Semester: 4

This award is given annually to assist students with travel and/or housing costs associated with attending a semester or more of academic study or co-operative work experience at a recognized university outside Canada. Depending on availability of funds, more than one recipient may be selected for this award. Applications must be accompanied by a one-page description of the planned travel, including budget, to the Chair of the Department of Physics at least two months prior to departure.

Qualifications: Student who has completed at least semester 4 of one of the majors in the Physics program with a cumulative average of 80% or greater, and who has obtained a Letter of Permission to attend the University abroad.

Campbell Scholarship

Amount: One (1) award of $500, awarded in winter semester.

Semester: 5

In honour of J.L. (Iain) Campbell, professor in the Department of Physics and former Provost and Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Guelph (1995 - 2000) and Dean of the College of Physical and Engineering Science (1987 - 1995). Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 5 and is currently registered in one of the majors in Physics and has a high cumulative average (at least 80%) in the required Physics courses normally taken in semesters 3, 4 and 5 of the major.

Egelstaff Scholarship

Amount: One award of $500.

Semester: 5

In honour of University Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Physics, Peter A. Egelstaff. Awarded in the Winter semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed Semester 5, is currently registered in one of the majors in Physics and has a high cumulative average (of at least 80%) in the required Physics courses normally taken in semesters 3, 4, and 5 of the major.

MacNaughton Scholarship

Amount: One award of $500.

Semester: 5

In honour of Earl B. MacNaughton, former head of the Department of Physics and founding Dean of the College of Physical Science. Awarded in the Winter semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students who has completed semester 5 and is currently registered in one of the majors in Physics and has a high cumulative average (at least 80%) in the required Physics courses normally taken in semesters 3, 4 and 5 of the major.

MacKenzie Scholarship

Amount: One award of $1000.

Semester: 5

In honour of University Professor Emeritus Innes K. MacKenzie. Not tenable with the Egelstaff Scholarship. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 5 and are currently registered in one of the majors in physics. It is given to a student with a high cumulative standing (of at least 80%) in the required physics courses normally taken in semesters 3, 4 and 5 of the major.

Physics Graduation Medal

Amount: One award of a medal.

Semester: 8

This medal is awarded annually to a graduating student. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 8 of any of the majors in Physics and who has obtained the highest cumulative average in the required Physics courses of that program, normally taken in semester 5 to 8.
