- Congratulations to James LeBlanc who won first place
in the GWPI poster session. Former student Kent Fisher
and new student Lukas Stille also won prizes for their
posters on work with other groups.
- We welcome Lukas Stille who has joined the group. Lukas is
doing a fourth year undergraduate project on graphene.
- Another paper with former undergraduate Kent Fisher has been
published in Europhysics Letters:

- Former postdoc Vlada Lukic is currently a visiting
Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology in the
USA.
- A brief article entitled "Carbon-based superconductors", by
Elisabeth Nicol has appeared in Physics in Canada
67, 78 (2011).
- Congratulations to Calvin Tabert who has been
awarded an NSERC scholarship for graduate study!
- We welcome Calvin Tabert who is joining our group
for graduate work. Calvin did his undergraduate degree at the University
of the Fraser Valley, BC.

2010
- Mei-Rong Li has been appointed a Director with
the Royal Bank of Canada.
- Ken Vos is Chair of the
physics department at the University of Lethbridge.
- Adrien Borne was awarded his M.Sc. in France
with highest honours.
- The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to
Geim and Novoselov for the discovery of graphene in 2006!
- We welcome Adam Pound who has joined the group as a postdoc. He
completed his PhD at Guelph in general relativity.
- Graduate student Adrien Borne's work has been
published in PRB as two papers:

- James LeBlanc, Jules Carbotte and
Elisabeth Nicol recently attended the LEES 2010 conference in the
Swiss alps (Les Diablerets, Switzerland). Elisabeth gave a talk on
graphene and Jules and James presented posters on the high temperature
cuprates.
- Congratulations to Jules Carbotte who was awarded an honorary degree
from McMaster University on June 8. He has been already been awarded
honorary degrees from Waterloo, Manitoba, and Sherbrooke.
- Congratulations to Aidan Brown on
winning the Governor General's Silver Medal for highest cumulative
graduating average in the University and for being named to the
CPES Society of Excellence for high academic standing and outstanding
contributions to the University community!
- Group members Adrien Borne, Kent Fisher and James LeBlanc presented posters on their research at the recent CIFAR Quantum Materials
meeting
in Montreal. They also attended the summer school for the meeting
where Elisabeth Nicol and Jules Carbotte gave lectures.
- Former group member J.P. Archambault is now a Research Associate at
the National Research Council.
- Congratulations to Kent Fisher and Aidan Brown on
winning NSERC CGMS scholarships for graduate study!
- Group members Kent Fisher and James LeBlanc presented talks on their work on high temperature superconductors at the recent APS March meeting
in Portland, Oregon.
- Congratulations to James LeBlanc on passing his
Ph.D. oral comprehensive exam!

- Former group member Ilya Vekhter
has just received promotion to Associate Professor
effective Jan. 12, 2010.
- News of former group members: Belen Valenzuela
was appointed as a tenured scientist in
the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC
in Fall 2009 and is a co-organizer for a conference in
the Canary Islands in the summer of 2010. Also, last
fall, Meirong Li moved to the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
to become a senior manager in risk analysis.
2009
- Graduate student James LeBlanc's

- Congratulations to James LeBlanc for winning one of the prizes
for best poster at the Guelph-Waterloo Physics Institute poster session.
- Elisabeth Nicol has been appointed as an affiliate member of the
Perimeter Institute and has also been made a faculty member of the Brockhouse
Institute for Materials Research at McMaster University.
- Congratulations to
graduate students James LeBlanc and Emilia Illes, who
have recently been awarded NSERC CGS scholarships based on their work in our
group. Former group
member Greg Demand also received one in the same competition.
