A Path to Lightweight Materials in Cars

Abstract
Although cars have been around for more than a century, the material making them up has mostly stayed the same – steel. Currently, the automotive industry is in the midst of a significant shift with the use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium at the forefront of automotive vehicle design considerations to improve fuel economy. Today, light weighting represents one of the nearest short term solutions to help the automotive industry meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards set by government’s in countries around the world.
Today, I will outline two areas of my research related to the development of lightweight alloys for the automotive industry including: 1) advanced aluminum sheet alloys and 2) magnesium alloys.
