Physics 125 (+1) Alumni Celebration

Posted on Friday, June 11th, 2021

Join us on Friday, June 25th 3:00-6:00 pm EDT, as we celebrate 125 years (+1) of the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph.  Our event will feature invited speakers, showcase our history, recognize some of our incredible achievements and be an opportunity to socialize with alumni, students, staff and faculty.

We are excited to host the event with the online platform Hopin, allowing us to create the effect of a virtual conference complete with a reception, lecture halls, and rooms for socializing, all through an easy to navigate interface.

The event begins with a welcome from the Department, followed by talks from our speakers, one a Guelph Physics alumnus and the other, a current Guelph Physics professor.

Dr. Scott VanBommel; Senior Research Scientist, Washington University in St Louis, Guelph Physics Alumnus (2010, 2013, 2017). Scott will be discussing the contributions Guelph has made to the Martian exploration program in a talk entitled Mars: Planet of the Robots.

Dr. Dennis Muecher, Assistant Professor, University of Guelph (joint appointment with TRIUMF) will speak about his research developing new techniques with proton beams in his talk Unlocking the Full Potential of Cancer Radiation Therapy.

Each talk will be followed by a moderated Q&A session giving our guests a unique opportunity to interact with some of the top physicists in their fields.

Moving seamlessly on from our fantastic presenters, guests will be able to socialize using our platform’s novel layout. Chat with your graduating class in cohort-specific breakout rooms or mingle with new friends in the reception area. Browse our photo archive of the last 125 years, play Quiz Room Chaos where you can try and beat your peers at first year physics quizzes, or check in on recorded video sessions of archival footage.

Register today!

Check out the event listing for more information about our speakers.
