Congratulations to Philippe Landry on winning the Canadian Association of Physicists' Division of Theoretical Physics (DTP) and the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics' (WITP) Thesis Prize for his Ph.D. thesis titled "Tidal Response of a Rotating Neutron Star in General Relativity".
Every year Student Life honours the "achievements and contributions of campus and community leaders who have made a lasting difference in the lives of our students and in the strong relationship that is fostered between the campus and greater community". This year, physics students Kristine Keon and Justin Medeiros were recognized for their efforts in these areas at the Student Life Awards night which took place on March 21st, 2018.
Congratulations to both the Nanoscience Club and the Physics Club who won first and second place, respectively, for Best CEPS exhibit last weekend at College Royal (March 17th-18th).
Professor Liliana Caballero wrote an opinion piece for the Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC) website titled "Wonders of a Woman in Physics" just following International Women’s Day addressing some of the challenges women face in scientific fields while commenting on her departmental initiative, the Women in Physics Lunches.
The recent issue of “Perspective Guelph”, distributed as an insert in the Globe and Mail on March 2nd, contains quite a few articles on the University of Guelph, its research and its support for entrepreneurship. Highlighted in three separate areas is Mirexus Biotechnologies, the company founded by Department of Physics Professor John Dutcher.
The Neutrino Physics Center at Fermilab "serves to foster communication between experimentalists on different neutrino experiments, between experimentalists and theorists, and between theorists, within the international neutrino user community and from Fermilab". The Center periodically has a "Question of the Week" for the community, and announces the winning submission shortly after.
Professor Caballero submitted an answer to the question: "How would a neutron star merger, in our Galaxy, be seen in DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment)?"
This past fall, University of Guelph Student Housing Services invited students residing in residence halls across campus (over 4500 students) to nominate their favourite Fall Semester professors.
Professor Joanne O'Meara was nominated by a significant number of students and is co-recipient of Fall 2017's "Residence Students' Favourite Fall Professor" distinction for positively impacting the academic experience at Guelph. Asked why they nominated Professor O'Meara as their favourite professor, one student wrote:
