Congratulations to Professor Martin Williams on being awarded the 2017 CAP Medal for Excellence in Teaching Undergraduate Physics! The award recognizes Professor Williams for "his exceptional ability to lead students to high academic achievements in physics through excellence and innovation in teaching and mentoring, for his contribution to curriculum design inspired by the results of Physics Education Research, and for his leadership in promoting the adoption of innovative research-based instructional strategies within the Canadian physics education community."

Through one of their assignments this semester in PHYS*4300, five U of G undergraduate physics students will soon have a wider audience with whom to share their stories. PHYS*4300 students were required to write a pitch for a story idea to Science Borealis, which was reviewed by their instructor, Joanne O’Meara, as well as the physics/astronomy editor at Science Borealis, Stephanne Taylor. Dr. Taylor completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics at U of G, and was enthusiastic about collaborating with her alma mater on this project.

John Malcolm successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on March 24, 2017: "The role of pseudospin in the optical and electronic properties of relativistic materials".

Congratulations to Professor Robert Wickham and former Ph.D student Russell Spencer whose article "Nucleation of the BCC phase from disorder in a diblock copolymer melt: Testing approximate theories through simulation" was selected as a 2016 Editors’ Choice article by the Journal of Chemical Physics.

Congratulations to the Physics Club for their College Royal exhibit on the weekend – they were awarded a red ribbon for their efforts!

Congratulations to Joseph Turko who placed second for Best Student Talk for his talk on "Simulating the DESCANT Neutron Detection Array with the Geant4 Toolkit" at the 54th Winter Nuclear & Particle Physics Conference. This year's conference took place at the Banff Centre, Banff Alberta, from February 16th to 19th, 2017.

Congratulations to Professor Alexandros Gezerlis on receiving tenure! Alexandros Gezerlis' tenure takes effect immediately and he will also be promoted to Associate Professor, effective July 1st, 2017.

Josh Mogyoros successfully defended his MSc thesis on December 6, 2016: "Flexibility of bacterial type IV pili determined using atomic force microscopy".
