The Department of Physics is offering 5 NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards under the following supervisors: Project descriptions have been pasted to the end of this email.

Expression and isotope-labelling of membrane proteins for spectroscopic studies [1] - Dr. John Dutcher
Binding of Biopactive Molecules to PhytoSpherix nanoparticles [2] - Dr. Paul Garrett
Gamma-ray spectroscopy following beta-decay; Analysis of data from GRIFFIN [3] - Dr. Vladimir Ladizhansky
Structural NMR studies of human Aquaporin 2 [4] - Dr. Stefan Kycia
Development of High-Resolution Paid Distribution X-ray Scattering with applications to Polymers [5]
Students who are offered a university USRA will work for a minimum of 16 weeks of full-time employment (35 hrs/week) at $16.00/hour. Start and end dates can be negotiated, but you must work a minimum of 16 weeks to qualify for an NSERC.
You are welcome to apply to more than one position. For positions in the Physics Department you need submit only ONE application, as the awarding of the five NSERC USRA’s is thru committee which includes the consultation of each of the above supervisors. It is advisable to contact the PI Please indicate in your covering letter the positions you are interested in applying to, in order of preference.
How to apply
STEP ONE
Complete an NSERC Form 202 Part 1 (online) and then print a hard copy of your application
- To register: https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/OnlineServices-ServicesEnLigne/Index_eng.asp [6] If you are new to this on-line system, click ‘First-time user? Please Register’. Complete screen and create an account.
- To log in: Click on ‘On-line System Login’ button.
- Click on ‘Forms- Student’.
- Select Form 202 - Part 1, ‘Create’. Enter and save your data. Please Note: If you have never applied for an NSERC USRA before, you will not have a PIN. You can leave the section blank on the form. If you are awarded a USRA, you will be assigned a PIN at that time.
- Upload an up-to-date official transcript to the NSERC site and then ‘verify’ your USRA application. Students from other Canadian universities must upload an up-to-date, complete official transcript including the legend.
Free official transcripts are available for USRA applicants. To obtain a free transcript from the University's Office of Registrarial Services, students must specifically note on the Transcript Request Form [7] that the official transcript is to be used for an “NSERC Scholarship Application”. This will indicate that the official transcript is to be free of charge. Note: There is a five-day turn-around time from the initial ordering of the transcript. If you require the transcript prior to the standard five days, then a $25 rush fee will apply.
STEP TWO
Submit your complete application in hard copy to REGGI VALLILLEE, Admin Ass’t, Department of Physics, CEPS, MacNaughton Room 210.
A complete package consists of the following:

- ORIGINAL transcript
- Cover Letter
- Resume
