1. Suppose Rose (see earlier example, pg 20-11) had used the same 1000 W, 110 V heater but her extension cords were of number 16 wire (0.163 cm diameter)

(a) What would be the power consumed in the heater?
(b) What would be the power loss in the extension cords?

 2. Two wires in a 40 km long transmission line carry 100 A. Each wire is 1.2 cm in diameter and has a resistivity of
1.72X10-8Wm.

(a) What power is lost in the lines?
(b) If the voltage were doubled, what approximate power would be lost in the lines? Assume that the power used in the load is much larger than that lost in the lines and that the load power does not change when the voltage is doubled.
