Course Content

  • Review of vector calculus (Chp. 2)
  • Electrostatics (Chp. 3): review; Green’s function; multipole expansion
  • Electric currents (Chp. 7): review
  • Magnetostatics (Chp. 8): review; vector potential; magnetic dipole
  • Electromagnetic induction (Chp. 10): review
  • Maxwell’s Equations (Chp. 11): displacement current, scalar and vector potentials,
    Maxwell’s equations in matter, energy and momentum of EM fields, EM waves in vacuum
  • Applications - Some or all of the following:
    – Wave guides and transmission lines (Chp. 14)
    – Generation of EM waves (Chp 15)
    – EM in astrophysics

Homework Assignments

Approximately one every two weeks, for a total of 5. The best 4 out of 5 will be used to calculate your mark.
