Abstract
The use of MeV ion beams as an analytical technique to determine elemental compositions and structural details of the surface of solid samples has been around since the early 1900s and is still an area of active research. Ion beam analysis encompasses many techniques which can be used individually or simultaneously with high sensitivity and accuracy. The beams can be focused down to a sub-micron scale or up to several millimetres. Ion beam work has been completed on cultural heritage artifacts, in forensic applications and in situ on other planets. This talk will detail the many ion beam analysis techniques, the underlying physics and their applications.
