Abstract

During an age where smaller is better, the hunt for more compact/miniature devices and new molecular electronics is constantly growing. When the size of these new devices is on the order of only a few molecular layers, one monolayer accounts for a large portion of the device. Therefore understanding the ordering of atoms and molecules on these surfaces, as well as surface-interface reactions is a crucial role for determining and manipulating device properties. In this lecture I am going to discuss why different surface structures occur focusing on Silicon,  and how we can experimentally determine and see these surfaces at the atomic/molecular layer (STM, AFM, LEED).
