Characterization of Colloidal Particles

Abstract

Colloidal suspensions are ubiquitous in our lives and in industry: the paint on our walls, the hand lotions we use to moisturize our skin, and even the whipped cream on our pumpkin pie we ate last weekend! Colloidal suspensions are uniformly mixed suspensions of “large” substance throughout a continuous phase. When formulating these mixtures for industrial use, it is important that the suspended particles be well characterized in order to maximize the applications, you have to know what you are working with! In this talk I will focus on some of the physical techniques used in academia and in industrial R&D labs used to characterize colloids suspended in an aqueous phase with an emphasis on particle sizing. Each technique imposes some implication (or bias) on the particle size and will also be discussed.
