Abstract

What if our entire Universe is just a hologram? This question seems more likely to be asked by Cheech and Chong rather than theoretical physicists. However, in recent decades, the Holographic Principle which says that physics occurring in the bulk of a spacetime can be modelled with a dual theory only on the boundary, has been a rapidly growing area of research. First proposed by Leonard Susskind and Gerard t’Hooft as a solution to the black hole information paradox, holography has now spread to several areas of physics including quantum field theory, fluid turbulence, condensed matter physics, and strong gravity. This talk will provide a qualitative introduction to the Holographic Principle, its history, applications, and of course the controversy surrounding its validity.
