PhysPhest 2013 Results

PhysPhest 2013 was held on September 4th. The results are as follows:

  • First prize --- Philippe Landry
  • Second prize (shared) --- Joel Klassen & Matthew O'Halloran
  • Third prize (shared) --- John (Ryan) Westernacher-Schneider & Jihae Baek

Congratulations to Robert Moscaritolo, Russell Spencer and Calvin Tabert on their success in giving their talks at the CAP Congress!

  • Russell Spencer placed first in the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics.
  • Robert Moscaritolo tied for first in the Division of Medical and Biological Physics and went on to win first prize overall for Best Student Talk in the Friday competition.
  • Calvin Tabert placed third in the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics.

Congratulations to Ryan Plestid on obtaining the second highest score in the past six years in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition!

Congratulations to Ryan Plestid whose score in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is the second highest score obtained at Guelph in the past six years; his score places him among the top 22% of students writing the Putnam this year North-America wide.

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an annual contest for college students established in 1938 in memory of its namesake.

Congratulations to Phys Phest 2012 award winners!

First prize was awarded to Robert Moscaritolo for his presentation MATLAB as an Analysis Tool for Quantifying “Bacterial Crowd Surfing”

Honourable Mentions went to Joseph Kuchar for his presentation Computing the Static Self Force in Exotic Spacetimes and Calvin Tabert for his presentation Dynamical Conductivity of AA-Stacked Bilayer Graphene

First Place: Alexis Wagner (Engineering) for her poster Optimization of Electrospun Poly(lactic acid)/Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) Blend Nanofibers for Flexible Electronics

Second Place: Lukas Stille (Physics) for his poster Optical signatures of the tunable band gap in silicene

Third Place: Colin Gram (Physics) for his poster Structure Calculation of the Membrane Protein Proteorhodopsin

Congratulations to Matthew O’Halloran on winning the J.B. Reynolds Graduation Medal

Eric Poisson, Chair, Department of Physics, presents  the J.B. Reynolds Graduation Medal to Matthew O'Halloran

Congratulations to Matthew O'Halloran on being awarded the J.B. Reynolds Graduation Medal in Physics for the 2011-2012 academic year. This Medal is awarded to the top graduating student who has completed semester 8 of any of the majors in Physics and obtained the highest cumulative average in the required Physics courses, normally taken in semester 5-8.
